Happiness is a Choice, Not a Goal!

Waisted EffortsHow many times have you said to yourself:

  • When I lose weight, then I will be happy.
  • When I find someone who loves me for who I am, then I will be happy.
  • When I make X amount of money, then I will be happy.

How about trying this:

  • When I am happy, then I will lose weight.
  • When I am happy, then I will find someone who loves me for who I am.
  • When I am happy, then I will make X amount of money.

Happiness is a state of mind or feeling characterized by contentment, love, satisfaction, pleasure, or joy. It is a choice we are given every single day.  Goals are a state of actions with a defined end or outcome.

Sometimes, for me, happiness is to just enjoy what comes along.  No plans.  No have-to’s.  Just enjoying the moments.

What about you?

  1. AMEN! I spent a lot of time in my 20s giving lip service to this concept with regard to relationships. Saying, “If you can’t be happy on your own, you’ll never be happy in a relationship.” I don’t think I really believed it in the core of my being, though, until I experienced it for myself. In 2006 I decided to live the life I wanted and do some things I’d always wanted to do, like taking salsa lessons. Making those decisions changed my life, and – bonus – also enabled me to start losing a big chunk of weight. If you’re not happy, nothing ‘external’ – losing weight, finding a man, whatever – will *make* you happy. You have to find your joy in life, thin or fat, young or old, short or tall, single or not…finding your JOY will then enable you to live out so many more of your dreams.

  2. Happiness is a choice I make everyday. So glad that some else gets it and passes it along. Cheers!

  3. You are right on about this. Now I have to pay attention to it!

  4. Happiness is definitely a choice.
