My ALL TIME life altering quote (Although I have MANY) is credited to Socrates! Wisdom Begins IN Wonder. That is my journey in a nutshell. I question, I ponder, I delve deep into my thoughts, and I search for QUESTIONS more than I do answers.
As many of you do, I love Lance over at The Jungle of Life and his newer blog, The Feel Good Jungle. He chose the RAOKA, Random Acts of Kick Arse, theme this month: WISDOM. This is my first RAOKA post, so I am just getting started with this project but BOY! Did I jump on this project! WHY? Because RAOKA blends and enhances The Bombshell ATTITUDE! that I am searching for and hoping to share with each of you!
I guess that is why I share my questions, my thoughts, why I seem to make people think. It’s because I do believe that Wisdom Begins in WONDER and part of what we see as wisdom is the foundation of creating a legacy. I am fascinated by the fact that the teachings of Socrates are often referred to as the Socratic problem. Socrates NEVER wrote anything. He was the main character of Plato. It has been determined that Socrates was a real, historical figure but how much of Plato’s accounts are factual is what is questioned.
That right there is what I think about WISDOM. It is the ability to live on through your words AND your actions. It is a point where others can take your questions and find their own answers within themselves. It is a point that no matter what there has to be a bit of FAITH involved. Learning to believe in ourselves is part of this journey. So, the first question…What is it about quotes? They inspire us. Most of us all have a favorite quote. A quote that motivates, speaks to your heart, that urges us to put actions behind the words.
Some other quotes by Socrates that have stirred the wonder in me:
- True wisdom comes to each of us when we realize how little we understand about life, ourselves, and the world around us
- He who is not contented with what he has, would not be contented with what he would like to have.
- Nature has given us two ears, two eyes, and but one tongue-to the end that we should hear and see more than we speak
- One thing only I know, and that is that I know nothing.
- Thou shouldst eat to live; not live to eat
- I cannot teach anybody anything, I can only make them think
- Enjoy yourself — it’s later than you think
- Let him that would move the world, first move himself.
Now, what is one of your favorite quotes (not necessarily one of Socrates or one above) AND WHY does it speak to you so much?
The quote that IMMEDIATELY comes to mind!
Share your wisdom with sharing your WONDER!

Oh you so need to visit my blog this weekend! Yesterday I also asked readers for their favorite quotes and there are some amazing ones on there – great wisdom.
Socrates was one smart dude:)
Though he left no writings, Diogenes is my spirit philosopher — Socrates on mental steroids. Among my favorite stories of The Master Dog is this:
Plato once said to Diogenes “If you had paid your respects to Dionysus, you would not be washing lettuces now,” to which, with equal calmness Diogenes replied, “If you had washed lettuces, Plato, you would not have had to pay your respects to Dionysus.”
I have been collecting quotes since 2003 & I have more than I can count on my blog posts & my weekly quote of the week.. hard for me to pick one as I love them all!
Thanks for the Socrates quotes… the dude (or Plato) knew a thing or two, didn’t he!
My current favorite??? I return over and over to the first line of Mary Oliver’s poem, The Wild Geese: “You do not have to be good.”
To help me live less fretfully, I change up the line:
You do not have to be thin.
You do not have to be right.
You do not have to be perfect.
You do not have to be happy.
You do not have to be rich.
You do not have to be young.
You do not have to be smart.
And on and on. BTW, the rest of the poem is just as good!
Jules,
So, so good to read this, and just let your thoughts on wisdom soak into my soul. When it comes to Socrates – that idea of when we realize how little we know, and the wisdom in that – I find that deeply powerful. And it’s also something I continue to more fully realize as I continue on this journey through life that I’m on.
One of my very favorite quotes is from Ralph Waldo Emerson:
“To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children … to leave the world a better place … to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.”
This one really speaks to me as to what I hope I can strive toward in my life….
