RetroFit

building retrofit

RetroFit Defined

to furnish (as a computer, airplane, or building) with new or modified parts or equipment

not available or considered necessary at the time of manufacture

to install (new or modified parts or equipment) in something previously manufactured or constructed

to adapt a new purpose or need – to modify

As I approach the beginning of the second half of my life (yes…I fully intend to live to be 100),  I am determined to make changes

This half will be driven by self-will  (which means a stubborn or willful adherence to one’s own desires or ideas)

rather than

willpower (which means energetic determination)

Why?

Because energetic determination can lose its momentum when it is not based within OUR desires and ideas

its energy relies on an outcome, an outside source

So, next week the retrofit project for me continues with putting the action behind ALL these ideas.  I have spent months installing new thoughts, new parts (of the plan) and the equipment needed to adapt a new purpose or need.  Things that I didn’t consider necessary in my earlier years. To modify what I see as being fit and installing modified exercises  on this previously constructed body of mine.

This whole idea, plan, purpose…has been rolling around in my head for quite awhile now. It was a seed planted by Roy over at Contemplative Fitness.  He shared an idea, a plan, of what he (and I believe Dr. J was part of that plan too) would like to do to help change the state of things and it involved kids.  So, I have taken that idea, and kept it close to my heart, and I will be doing some things of my own, with his idea (with his permission and support, of course)

It has to start somewhere and I intend to start it in my own little corner of the world.   Baby steps.

See ya back on Monday!

What might you want to retro-fit in your life?

Do you use will power or self- will to drive your changes?

ADDED NOTE:   as I was getting ready to publish, I let it sit and went to read other blogs, here is a great post that defines self-will to make real changes

  1. Dr. J says:

Yes, that was a plan that Roy and I were working on.

Anything that can help children be healthier and fitter in today’s world is a wonderful thing! The good choices that we make with our children will lead to the best future we can have! (The good choices we make with ourselves will lead to the best present.)

Love this, Jules. I’ve thought for quite awhile now that willpower is only useful for short spurts, like the booster engine that lifts a space shuttle up into orbit, but dies out fast. We need to WANT to keep going, otherwise it’s just a temporary change.

I’d never heard it described this way, with the terms and definitions of self-will and willpower. But I sooo agree. And that link to Carla’s article? Fabulous. Thanks for that, too.

Looking forward to seeing what you’re up to. :-)

  3. Wow yet again Jules… and I read Carla’s post and feel a bit stumped. I’m the ‘before’… wanting to lose weight for all sorts of reasons other than because I’m worth it or deserve to be fitter and healthier. F*ck! More fodder for my mind to ponder.
