Trumpets

mushrooms

Hubby brought home a gift for me yesterday to support me in my efforts for healthy eating and wanting to try new things... Mushrooms Problem #1   I don't know what kind they are He was told that they are used for cooking in some higher end restuarants Problem #2  I don't know how to cook them My basic of basic cooking skills have only exposed me to standard button, sliced crimini and last year Portobello. After a few tweets, a couple of facebook posts, and some incredible links given...(thanks roni) I have figured out they are Black Trumpet and King Trumpet mushrooms (even the names bring about thoughts of royalty) So tonight I will be trying my hand at … [Read more...]

In the Kitchen & a giveaway

kitchen_lady

Well, needless to say, last nights crock pot dinner, was a creative disaster. My relationship with cooking is worse than my relationship with food and something I have attempted to change for years(and years and years) I could not, in my wildest dreams, imagine being a chef but I like to pretend. I own a ton of cookbooks, study the online recipe sites, and well let's just say I sometimes have a black thumb in the kitchen. Part of the problem, isn't the recipes, its me and time in the kitchen. I get distracted easily, sometimes forgetting I have something cooking. I use multiple timers and my crock pot has become a great friend of the years for that very reason. I … [Read more...]

What’s Cooking on a budget

family feast

A few weeks back I posted Fun Foodie with some ideas I found for having fun with food. One of the projects was bringing out old cookbooks and displaying them in the new shelves in the kitchen. Learning to have fun with food has been an interesting project to take on. While most of my cookbooks are "diet" cookbooks or my treasured, autographed Julia Child cookbooks, I found one that is well rounded for my mission. Family Feasts for $75 a week by Mary Ostyn - who is a blogger I now follow over at OwlHaven For the next few weeks, I will be sharing some of the techniques in the cookbook that I am incorporating into my "cooking fun". First tip:  Cooking spray -  Making my own … [Read more...]

Kitchen Mad Scientist

mad-scientist

I am not a chef; it's more like a mad scientist preparing for a new experiment each time I enter the kitchen.  It's not so much my relationship with food but my relationship with cooking that I have had to work on. My basis for cooking was learned early on by reading directions on a box.  My very first cooking experiment was when I was 9.  I donned my Mom's apron and made spaghetti.  WOW.  I can cook!  I can really cook!  I had stepped beyond the box and added a jar, Ragu to be exact.  I thought I was onto a new career as I had moved beyond fried chicken from a box. Well, I have gotten a little better.  Practice has not made me perfect by any means but I certainly enjoy myself … [Read more...]

Uncle Sam Cereal Review

uncle same

This is a long.....overdue product review Uncle Sam Cereal by attune foods. I received not one, not two, but three boxes of Uncle Sam cereal to try out. Honey - Almond, Wild Strawberry, and Multi-Grain. Princess V loved the Wild Strawberry. I tried the Honey-Almond first.  It was quite filling and honestly, I am NOT really a morning cereal person.  But, I thoroughly enjoyed the whole box PLUS the other two instead of granola with my yogurt. Yes.. for me, being a non cereal lover girl, I LOVED it much more than any granola I have tried.  Not too sweet, just the right amount of crunch and it did NOT get lost within the yogurt. Next, maybe, I will try their actual … [Read more...]
